House rules

Connect is a small place for people who want to talk to each other. These rules keep it that way. They are short because they are simple.

  1. Talk to people who want to talk to you. Anyone can find you by username, and you can find anyone — that is not an invitation to message strangers who don't answer. If someone doesn't reply, that is a reply.
  2. No harassment, threats or hate. Not as a joke, not just once, not because they started it.
  3. Nothing illegal. No sexual content involving minors, no scams, no selling what you are not allowed to sell.
  4. What is said here stays between the two of you. Don't share someone's photos, voice notes or screenshots of a chat without asking them. Don't record a call without saying so.
  5. One person, one account. No bots, no spam, no pretending to be someone you are not. A cat is fine.

Break these and your account can be removed without warning. If someone is breaking them with you: clear or delete the chat from the home screen (press and hold their name), mute them, and tell the person who runs Connect.

Privacy

This is what Connect keeps, where, and why. There is nothing else.

Your account

You sign in with Google. Google tells Connect your account id, name, email and profile photo; Connect stores your account id, the username you choose, and the photo you pick (your Google photo, one you upload, or a cat). Your email is held by the sign-in service and shown only to you. Anyone signed in can find you by username and see your username, photo, and whether you are online or when you were last seen.

Your messages are end-to-end encrypted

Everything you say is locked on your device before it leaves it: the words, photos, files, voice notes, the GIF you picked, reply quotes, reactions and the one-line preview on the home screen. It is stored in Google's Firestore database and carried by Google's push service as ciphertext only. The keys live on your devices and the other person's — in the browser's own key store, never on a server — so nobody in between, including the person who runs Connect, can read a chat. Messages are not scanned, analysed or used for anything but showing them to the two of you.

How it works: each device you sign in on makes its own key pair and publishes the public half. Each chat has a key that is handed to every device of both people, wrapped so only that device can open it, and replaced with a fresh one every week. A new device is given the chat's keys by one you already use, or by the other person, the next time either opens Connect. Because the public keys are looked up through Connect's database, the guarantee rests on those keys being genuine — the security code in a chat's menu is a fingerprint of both people's device keys; compare it in person or on a call to be sure, and you are told when the other person adds a device. Messages sent before this update were stored unencrypted; each is encrypted by its sender the next time they open that chat.

What is not hidden, because the app cannot work without it: who talks to whom and when, whether a message is text, a photo, a file or a voice note (not what is in it), its size, whether it was edited or deleted, read receipts, typing, disappearing-message timers, and call logs (that a call happened and for how long). GIFs are pictures on KLIPY's or GIPHY's servers; what you type into the GIF search goes to KLIPY through Connect's server without your name, and the GIF itself is fetched from their servers by both phones. Clearing the browser's site data removes that device's keys, and the chat's history comes back to it once another device that holds them opens Connect.

Deleting

Deleting a message removes it for both people and leaves a "message deleted" marker. Disappearing messages are deleted when their timer ends. Clear chat and Delete chat hide a chat on your side only — the other person keeps their copy, just as you keep yours when they clear it. Deleting your account (Profile → Delete my account) removes your username, photo and notification devices and signs you out; messages you sent stay in the chats of the people you sent them to.

Calls

Video and voice calls go directly between your two devices when the network allows, and otherwise through a relay (Cloudflare) that passes the encrypted stream along without storing it. Setting up the call goes through the PeerJS signalling service. Nothing about a call is recorded; the chat keeps only that a call happened and how long it lasted.

Notifications

If you turn notifications on, a device token is stored under your account so Connect can reach that device. A notification carries the sender's username and the encrypted preview; your phone decrypts it with the chat's key to show the words, and shows "New message" if it can't. Google's (and on iPhone, Apple's) push service only ever sees the ciphertext. Muting a chat stops its message notifications.

What Connect does not do

No analytics, no ads, no trackers, no selling or sharing of anything with anyone. The services involved are Google (sign-in, encrypted storage, push), Vercel (the app and its three small server functions), Cloudflare (call relay), and KLIPY (GIF search) — none of them can read a chat, and each sees only what it needs to do its job.

These play whenever Connect is open. When it is closed, your phone plays whatever sound it has given Connect's notifications. Here is how to make that the ring or the meow.

🤖 On Android
  1. Save a sound. Tap ⬇ next to the ring or the meow above. It lands in your Downloads folder as Connect ring.mp3 / Connect meow.mp3.
  2. Move it where Android looks. Open the Files app (on Xiaomi/Redmi: File Manager) → Downloads → press and hold the file → Move → Internal storage → the Notifications folder. Any sound in that folder appears in every notification sound list. (Some phones also offer “+ Add” or “Choose local file” inside the sound picker in step 4 — that works too.)
  3. Open Connect's notification settings. Either way works:
    • Settings → Apps → Connect → Notifications. If Connect isn't installed and you use it in Chrome, it is under Chrome → Notifications → Sites → connect-qd12.vercel.app.
    • Or tap Show a test notification below, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade, press and hold the Connect notification that appeared there — not the button in this app — and tap ⚙ / ⓘ.
  4. Pick the sound. Tap the notification category (it may be called General, Sites, or the site address) → Sound → choose Connect ring or Connect meow. While you are there set Importance (or Priority) to Urgent so calls pop over whatever you're doing.

Android gives an app one sound, so choose: with the ring, calls ring like a phone (a text will ring once too); with the meow, texts meow and calls meow every few seconds, with a long buzz, until you answer. The moment you open Connect, the proper ring takes over.

🍎 On iPhone
  1. Apple does not let web apps use their own sound. Connect's notifications play the iPhone's default tone and that cannot be changed — the same is true of every web app on iPhone. The ring and the meow play only while Connect is open.
  2. Install it first. In Safari, tap Share → Add to Home Screen, and open Connect from that icon. iPhone only allows notifications for installed web apps; the 🔔 notifications button appears once you do.
  3. Let it through. Settings → Notifications → Connect → turn on Allow Notifications, Sounds and Banners; if Time Sensitive is offered, allow it so calls get past Focus.
  4. A call re-alerts and vibrates every few seconds until it is answered or declined, and rings properly the instant you open Connect.
💻 On a computer
  1. Keep Connect open or installed: a call rings through it even when it is in the background.
  2. With it closed, your system's notification sound plays and the call notification re-alerts every few seconds until you answer. Windows and macOS let you turn that sound on or off per app, not change it.

🔒 End-to-end encryption

Messages, photos, files, voice notes, GIFs and reactions are locked on your device with a key that only your devices and theirs hold. They travel and are stored as ciphertext: nobody in between — not Google, not Connect — can read them. Calls are encrypted by your browser end to end as well.
